The difference between Wootz and Damascus

The difference between Wootz and Damascus

The original Wootz steel (originated in South India) is characterized by a pattern of bands and high carbon content. Wootz steel was amongst the finest in the world. It is the metal that was used to fashion weapons such as the famous Damascus blades of the Middle Ages. Many claim that modern attempts to duplicate the metal have not been entirely successful due to differences in raw materials and manufacturing techniques.

The "Modern Damascus" is an interpretation of the Wootz steel pattern and refers mostly to the pattern in the steel, rather than the actual composition of the steel. Our own handmade patterned welding Damascus blade is the result of over 1000 layers of steel.

When creating the Roselli Ultra High Carbon (UHC) steel, Heimo Roselli set out to develop a high-carbon steel inspired by the legendary Wootz steel, known for its exceptional performance. In the early days, he called this steel Roselli Wootz, but it has since been renamed Roselli UHC steel. Some resellers still use the old name Roselli Wootz, but it refers to the same steel – the Roselli UHC.
